We Timed Every Torch We Sell: The 80,000-Lumen One Holds It for 30 Seconds (UAE 2026)

This is Acebeam’s own product image, and it is the whole problem in one picture: “80000 Lumens” printed in numerals three centimetres tall, and nowhere on it the words “for 30 seconds”.

The 30-second verdict

Every torch in this shop is sold on a single big number. The Acebeam X75 says 80,000 lumens. It holds that number for 30 seconds. Then it drops to 12,000 and stays there for the next 42 minutes.

That is not a defect, and it is not Acebeam being dishonest — the step-down is printed in the official specification, and every serious brand does the same thing. But almost nobody reads it, because the box only shouts the first number.

So we sat down and pulled the manufacturer runtime data for all 24 lights we currently stock, and built the table nobody in this industry wants to publish: what the headline is, how long it survives, and what you actually get for the rest of the night.

The short version: buy on the second number, not the first. And the pattern is almost perfectly inverted — the bigger the headline, the faster it evaporates. The cheapest light in this table holds its rated output longer than the most expensive one.

All figures below come from the manufacturer’s own published output tables for the exact variant we stock in the UAE. Where a light has several LED options, we used the one on our shelf.

Why this happens (and why it is not a scam)

A flashlight is a small metal object trying to dump 20–200 watts of heat through a body you are holding in your bare hand. There are only three ways that ends: the light gets dangerously hot, the battery dies in four minutes, or the driver steps the output down.

Every well-made torch chooses option three. It is called thermal regulation, and it is a feature. A light that genuinely held 80,000 lumens would burn your palm and flatten its cells inside five minutes.

The problem is not the step-down. The problem is that the marketing uses the 30-second number and the spec sheet hides the 42-minute number three clicks deep. We would rather put both in the same table.

The three most honest lights we sell

1. Olight i1R 2 Pro (AED 95) — 180 lumens, flat, for 23 minutes. No step-down is published at all. It is a 22-gram keychain light with modest ambitions, and it delivers exactly what it says until the cell runs out. The cheapest rechargeable light on our shelf is also the most truthful one.

2. Acebeam L19 2.0 (AED 369) — loses only 33%. The best-regulated high-output light in the range by a wide margin: 1,650 lm for nearly two minutes, then 1,100 lm, then 870 lm for another hour and a half. That is a thrower you can actually work with, not a camera flash. See the L19 2.0.

3. Acebeam TAC AA 2.0 (AED 146.53) — 1,000 lm to 500 lm. Only a 50% step, and here is the part we like: the settled 500 lumens is higher than the light’s own High mode (260 lm). Turbo is not a party trick on this one — it is the mode you should leave it in.

The three biggest drops

Acebeam X75 — 85%. 80,000 lumens for 30 seconds. To be fair to it, the 12,000 lumens it settles at is still more light than almost anything else in this table produces at full tilt, and in POWER mode it will hold 23,000 lm — but only for 20 minutes. Buy it as a 12,000-lumen light with a spectacular party trick.

Acebeam X25 and Olight Perun 2 Mini — 77% each. Very different lights, identical honesty problem. The X25’s 22,000 lm lasts one minute; the Perun 2 Mini’s 1,100 lm lasts two. On the headlamp especially this matters: plan your night around 250 lumens, which is genuinely enough for camp and close work, and treat the 1,100 as a two-minute searchlight.

Acebeam Keylite 500 — 20 seconds. The shortest headline in the shop. 500 lm for twenty seconds, 260 lm for five minutes, then 50 lm. It is a keyring light and it is priced like one at AED 89 — just know that its real job is the 50-lumen setting that runs for 35 minutes.

Three lights where the data simply is not published

We would rather flag a gap than fill it with a guess.

  • Acebeam H30 (AED 389). Acebeam lists Turbo-Max as 4,000 lumens for 2 hours with no step-down at all. Either that is exceptional thermal design, or the table is incomplete. We think you should plan around the published High mode — 1,100 lm for 3 hours — and treat anything above it as a bonus.
  • LOOP GEAR SK05 Pro 2 (AED 599). The newest brand on our shelf publishes no per-mode runtimes at all. Their own product page says 5,000 lumens is a maximum and not a level you hold, which is more candour than most — but it is still not a number.
  • Olight i3E EOS (AED 59). A single-mode AAA twist light. No runtime curve exists because there is only one mode.

How to actually buy on the second number

  1. Decide how long you need light for. Under two minutes — finding a dropped key, checking a noise — and the headline number is the right one to shop on. Anything longer and it is irrelevant.
  2. Find the settled figure and halve your expectations from the box. Across this whole table the median first step-down is about 65%. If a torch claims 3,000 lumens, plan on roughly 1,000.
  3. Check the High mode, not just Turbo. On most of these lights the settled Turbo output and the High mode land in the same place — which tells you what the body can actually dissipate.
  4. Watch for lights where Turbo settles above High. The TAC AA 2.0 does this. It means Turbo is the sensible default rather than an emergency button.

What we would change

Every brand in this table publishes the step-down data honestly somewhere in its documentation. Not one of them puts it on the front of the box, and no retailer we know of — ourselves included, until today — puts it in the product title.

The fix would be trivial: print both numbers. “4,600 lumens / 1,200 sustained” tells a buyer more in six words than any amount of packaging ever has. Until that happens, tables like this one are the workaround.

So should you care?

If you are buying a torch for the house, the car or a bag — yes, enormously. You will spend 99% of your time on the settled number, and you should choose the light that settles where you need it rather than the one with the biggest headline.

If you are buying for search, rescue or photography — less so. A 30-second burst of 80,000 lumens is genuinely useful when you need to identify something 600 metres away right now, and the X75 exists for exactly that.
