The 30-second verdict

The Acebeam TAC AA 2.0 is a 75-gram, 105-millimetre tactical torch that takes a single AA-sized cell and throws further than anything else this small that we stock. AED 146.53. It ships with an Acebeam 14500 USB-C rechargeable cell, and it will also run on an ordinary AA from a petrol station.

The catch, and it is the whole review: the 1,000 lumens on the box lasts 35 seconds. After that it settles to 500 lumens and holds that for 49 minutes. That is not a scandal — 500 lumens for the best part of an hour out of a cell the size of your little finger is genuinely good — but if you buy this expecting 1,000 lumens to be a setting rather than a moment, you will be disappointed on night one.

The second catch is on our own product page, and we would rather point at it ourselves than let you find it: the title says 360 metres. The version we actually stock reaches 280 metres. More on that below, because the explanation is genuinely useful.

Read this bit before anything else: which TAC AA 2.0 is this?

Acebeam builds the TAC AA 2.0 with two completely different emitters, and they are not interchangeable:

The 360-metre figure in the product title belongs to the red/blue SFT-25R model. We only stock the black TN version. You get 100 more lumens and 80 fewer metres. For most people in the UAE that is the better trade — but you should know which one is arriving.

The variant name on the product page is correct: Black — TN LED 6500K Max Output: 1000lms, 280m. The page title is the thing that needs fixing, and it is on our list.

The output curve — what each mode actually does

Look at the Turbo row and the High row together. Turbo settles at 500 lumens; High starts at 260. So Turbo is not a mode you use sparingly — after the first half-minute it simply becomes a very good 500-lumen setting that runs for the better part of an hour. Use it as your default and treat the 1,000 as a free bonus for the first 35 seconds.

The 58-hour Low is the other underrated number. Five lumens is enough to read a map, find a zip, or walk a corridor, and 58 hours means the light is still alive on day three of a camping trip. We wrote about why the low modes matter more than the headline number if you want the longer argument.

The AA question — the one everybody gets wrong

“Runs on AA” is the headline feature of this torch, and it is real: if the included cell dies in the middle of nowhere, you can walk into any ADNOC station, buy a AA, and keep going. Nothing else in our catalogue at this brightness lets you do that.

But those 1,000 lumens are not AA lumens. They come from the included 14500 lithium-ion cell, which runs at roughly 3.7 volts. An alkaline AA runs at 1.5. Acebeam does not publish separate AA figures for the TAC AA 2.0 — so rather than invent a number, here is the honest evidence from its sibling, the TAC 2AA, where Acebeam does publish both:

That is a 61% drop in output and a third off the reach, on the same torch, purely from the chemistry in the tube. Expect the same order of change here.

So treat AA compatibility as a spare tyre, not a fuel tank. Run the 14500 day to day; keep a AA in the glovebox for the night the charger stayed at home. If you want the full picture on why the cell decides your lumens, we have a whole guide on it.

About that 32,400 candela

This is a small thing, and skipping it changes nothing about whether you should buy the torch — but it is the kind of detail we would want told to us.

Beam distance and candela are locked together by one formula: distance = 2 × √candela. Run it: 2 × √32,400 = 360 metres exactly. That is the red/blue SFT-25R version’s number, not the black one’s. For the black TN version’s stated 280 metres, the intensity would need to be about 19,600 cd.

In other words, the 32,400 cd sitting in the black version’s spec column looks like it was copied across from the row above it. Trust the 280 metres. If candela and beam distance are new to you, this explainer is the ten-minute version.

What we would change

  • The mode menu is genuinely daft. There are six mode groups — two-mode, four-mode, with strobe, with SOS, reversed order, Turbo-only. To switch between them you half-press the switch more than twenty times in a row, then count the flashes. Set it once, then never think about it again, because you will not remember the procedure in six months.
  • No published IP rating. Acebeam quotes “waterproof to 2 metres” and “impact-resistant from 1.5 metres,” which is reassuring language, but there is no IPX8 or IP68 code on the spec sheet. We flag this the same way we flagged it on the Acebeam H30. It will survive rain and a dropped-in-a-puddle moment. We would not take it snorkelling — for that, read our IP ratings guide and buy something rated for it.
  • Cool white only, no high-CRI option here. 6500K is clinical. Skin, wood and sand all look slightly wrong under it. If colour matters to you, the Pokelit AA uses a Nichia 219F at CRI 90+ instead.
  • Black is the only colour we stock. The tan and red/blue bodies you will find in Acebeam’s photography are not on our shelf.

The pattern is clean. The TAC AA 2.0 is the reach specialist of the AA class — 280 metres from something that fits a jeans pocket, which is more than three times what the Pokelit manages. The Pokelit AA is the one to buy if you look at things closely rather than far away. The TAC 2AA is brighter and lasts longer but is 45 mm longer and 31 g heavier. The i3T 2 EOS is the cheap, simple, genuinely pocketable one.

What owners say

Three reviews on the product page, all five stars. Worth reading with one eye open, though: two of the three are describing the SFT-25R red and orange bodies — “it can throw like a champ as the reflector head is a bit larger than typical AA 14500 flashlights” — which is the version we do not stock. The praise for the size, the throw and the tint is still relevant. The specific colours are not available here.

So should you buy it?

Yes, if you want the longest reach available in a single-AA torch, you like a tail switch you can operate with a thumb, and you value being able to run on a supermarket battery in an emergency. At AED 146.53 with a 10-year warranty handled by us in the UAE, it is a lot of torch for the money.

Probably not, if you mostly light things within arm’s reach — buy the Pokelit AA and enjoy the colour rendering instead. Or if you want the 360-metre red/blue model, because we do not have it.

Definitely not, if you need a documented IP rating for work, or you want warm light. Those are different torches, and we would rather sell you the right one.
