The 30-second version
- Your torch goes in your hand baggage. With the battery installed it is technically allowed in checked bags too, but every authority prefers the cabin, and so do we.
- Spare cells — that second 21700 — are cabin only. Never checked. This is the rule that actually catches people.
- Nothing we sell needs airline approval. The biggest lights in our range are 61.2 Wh; the approval threshold is 100 Wh.
- Tape the terminals or keep spare cells in a case. Loose cells rattling against keys and coins is exactly what the rule exists to prevent.
- One product of ours counts as a power bank — the Olantern Classic 2 Pro. Those rules got much stricter in 2026. See below.
What actually changed in 2026
Two things, and they are separate:
1. ICAO adopted a global power bank standard on 27 March 2026. Signed off by the ICAO Council and applying across its member states, it is the first coordinated international rule on portable batteries. In short: a maximum of two power banks per passenger, cabin only, no charging in flight (you may not charge the power bank from the aircraft, nor charge your phone from the power bank), and they may not go in the overhead bin — they must stay where crew can see and reach them.
2. Emirates went further, earlier. Since 1 October 2025, Emirates allows one power bank under 100 Wh per passenger, and using it onboard is prohibited outright. It must be kept under the seat in front or in the seat pocket — not the overhead bin. flydubai applies the standard two-bank limit.
Neither of those changes is about flashlights. That distinction is the whole point of this article.
Your torch is not a power bank — with one exception
A power bank exists to charge other devices. A flashlight exists to make light. The 2026 restrictions above target power banks, so a normal torch is not caught by the two-unit limit or the in-flight use ban.
But one light in our range genuinely is a power bank. The Olight Olantern Classic 2 Pro carries 11,200 mAh / 40.32 Wh and has Type-C and USB-A outputs rated 18 W — it will charge your phone. If cabin crew ask, that is a power bank, and the stricter rules apply: cabin only, not in the overhead locker, and on Emirates it would count as your one permitted unit and could not be used in flight.

We would rather tell you that now than have you argue it at the gate. If you are flying to a campsite, the lantern is the item to think about — not the torch.
Every light we sell, in watt-hours
Watt-hours are what the rules actually measure: Wh = (mAh ÷ 1000) × volts. Under 100 Wh you need no permission. Here is our whole range, using the figures the manufacturers publish:

So the honest answer to “do I need permission to fly with this?” is no, for everything in our shop. Even the 80,000-lumen X-series monsters sit at 61.2 Wh, well under the 100 Wh line. Where they will cause you trouble is weight and the security tray, not paperwork.
A note on the AA and AAA lights — the i3E EOS, Pokelit AA and TAC 2AA. On ordinary alkaline cells there is no watt-hour limit to worry about at all, which quietly makes them the most travel-proof lights we sell. Acebeam does not publish the mAh of the lithium cells included with the Pokelit and TAC, so we are not going to compute a figure for those — but a AA-sized cell is nowhere near any limit.
Installed vs spare: the rule that catches people
This is the one worth memorising, because it is where travellers actually get stopped:

Under the international guidance you may carry a reasonable quantity of spare cells under 100 Wh for personal use — commonly cited as up to 20 — and a maximum of two spares in the 100–160 Wh band, with airline approval. Nothing we sell reaches that band, so for our customers the practical limit is simply “a sensible number for your trip”.
Two details people miss:
- Terminal protection is mandatory, not advice. Original packaging, a plastic battery case, or tape over the contacts. A bare 21700 loose in a bag with keys is a short circuit waiting to happen.
- If your cabin bag gets gate-checked, take the batteries out first. When a carry-on is taken at the gate, spare cells and power banks must come out and stay with you in the cabin. This is easy to forget when you are last to board.

The pattern to take away: the airline may always be stricter than the global rule, never looser. Emirates proves it. Check your specific carrier before you pack, especially on codeshares where the operating airline is not the one on your ticket.
Before you leave for DXB
- Torch out of the checked bag, into your hand luggage.
- Spare cells in a case or taped — hand luggage only.
- Lock out the torch if it has a lockout mode, or loosen the tailcap a quarter turn, so it cannot switch on in your bag. A 4,000-lumen head against nylon gets hot.
- Travelling with the Olantern? Treat it as your power bank allowance.
- Long trip, no sockets? A swappable-cell light plus a spare beats a sealed one — but the spare still rides in the cabin.
Honest caveats
We sell torches; we are not a regulator. Three things you should hold us to:
- These rules changed in 2026 and can change again. Everything above is accurate as we write it in July 2026. Before a big trip, check the current page for your airline.
- The airline and the security officer have the final say, whatever any guide says. If crew ask you to stow something differently, do it.
- Destination rules can differ from departure rules. Coming back into the UAE is straightforward; some other countries apply their own limits on arrival.
