The 30-second version

Most people choose a flashlight by its lumen number. That number is only half true, because the battery decides how much of it you actually get. Put a normal AA in an Acebeam TAC 2AA and its turbo drops from 1,600 lumens to 630 — same torch, same LED, different cell.

Here is the short answer for the UAE:

  • Want it to always work, anywhere? Buy AA or AAA. You can replace them at any baqala or petrol station at 2 a.m.
  • Want real brightness and running cost near zero? Buy a Li-ion light — 18650 or 21700.
  • Going somewhere with no power for days? Buy a light with a swappable standard cell, not a sealed one. This matters more than the lumen number.
  • Everything on your keys (imini 2, i1R 2 Pro) has a tiny sealed battery measured in minutes, not hours. That is fine — just do not treat it as your emergency light.

Why the battery decides your lumens

A LED can only give out what the cell can push into it. Alkaline and Ni-MH batteries have higher internal resistance than lithium-ion, so they cannot deliver the current a turbo mode demands. The LED does not change. The current does.

The clearest example in our catalogue is the Acebeam TAC 2AA (AED 169), because Acebeam publishes both tables. The same torch, measured on its included lithium cell versus ordinary AA rechargeables:

Read that bottom row again. On the low modes the AA version is equal or better — 98 hours versus 94. Alkaline and Ni-MH are perfectly good at low current. They only fall apart when you ask for turbo. So “AA is weak” is wrong; the honest version is AA is weak at high output and completely fine at low output.

“Rechargeable” does not mean “you can change the battery”

This is the single most misread spec in the category, and the two headlamps we sell make the point perfectly. Both carry a 5,000 mAh 21700. They are not the same thing.

The Perun 3 is lighter, better sealed and a beautifully made headlamp — we said so in our Perun 3 review. But when it is flat, it is flat until you find power. The H30 takes a second 21700 out of your pocket and keeps going.

So the rule is not “sealed is bad”. It is: sealed is fine when you sleep near a charger, and wrong when you do not. A weekend in the Hatta wadis or a night shift with no socket is a swappable-cell job.

How it charges — and the cable that is not in the box

There are four charging systems in our catalogue, and they are not interchangeable:

  • USB-C straight into the light. The easy one. Acebeam H30, Marauder Mini 2, Seeker 4 Pro (through its holster). Any USB-C cable you already own works.
  • Magnetic only. The Perun 3 charges with an MCC3 cable and has no USB-C port on the light at all. The Baton 4 Standard is the same story with an MCC 1A cable. Lose that proprietary cable in the desert and a normal USB-C cable will not save you. Buy a spare.
  • A built-in plug. The imini 2 has its own USB contact under a cover — no cable needed, which is the whole point of a keyring light.
  • No charging. The i3E EOS runs on an AAA. When it dies you replace it. That is a feature, not a flaw, for a glovebox or a drawer.

One thing worth saying plainly: the Baton 4 Pro supports USB-C, but the box contains only the MCC3 magnetic cable. The spec sheet says “USB-C / MCC” and the package contents say MCC3. If you were counting on plugging it into the same cable as your phone, budget for one.

Same class of catch on the Baton 4: the USB-C charging case you see in Olight’s marketing photos belongs to the Premium bundle. The version we stock is the Standard — light, MCC 1A cable, pouch. No case.

Lithium batteries in UAE heat

This is the part that actually matters here and gets left out of most battery guides.

Olight publishes a working temperature for the Marauder Mini 2: 0–40 °C. Dubai in July is regularly above 40 °C in the shade, and the inside of a car parked in the sun goes far past that. A lithium cell held at high temperature loses capacity permanently, and it does so quietly — you will not notice until the runtime is half what it was.

Practical rules:

  • Do not store a lithium light in the car through summer. This is the most common way people kill a good torch here. If you want a light that lives in the glovebox year-round, make it an alkaline one — the i3E EOS at AED 59 is exactly that light.
  • Do not charge a cell that is still hot from turbo or from the boot of the car. Let it come down to room temperature first.
  • Store at part charge, not empty and not full, if a light is going in a drawer for months.
  • Most brands do not publish a working temperature at all. Of the lights above, only the Marauder Mini 2 lists one. We are not going to invent figures for the rest — treat 40 °C as the sensible ceiling for any of them.

What we would change

Three honest gripes, none of them dealbreakers:

  1. Magnetic-only charging is a lock-in. Olight’s MCC system charges fast and seals better, but it means a proprietary cable per household. We would rather see USB-C on the light and magnetic as an option.
  2. “Battery included” hides a lot. A 650 mAh 16340 and a 7,500 mAh 32650 are both “included”. The capacity, not the word, decides your evening.
  3. Working temperature is almost never published. In a market where 45 °C is a normal August afternoon, that should be on every spec sheet.
