Olight O'Pen 3 Review: The Pen That Points, Writes and Lights Up the Room (UAE 2026)

Most pen lights are a compromise: a mediocre pen wrapped around a mediocre torch. The Olight O’Pen 3 (AED 378) takes a different approach — it is a proper aluminium pen first, with a 120-lumen clip light, a red night-vision light, a tiny writing light in the tip, and a Class 3R green laser pointer folded in. We have carried one between meetings, gloveboxes and bedside tables for a while now. Here is where it earns its price — and where a normal torch beats it.

The 30-second verdict

Who it’s for — and who should skip it

Buy the O’Pen 3 if: you present on screens or in boardrooms (the laser is the headline feature), you take notes in dim places — night shifts, inspection rounds, flights — or you want a gift that feels expensive and gets used daily. It clips like a pen, writes like a good pen, and the light is always one click away.

Skip it if: you want maximum light per dirham. At AED 378 the O’Pen 3 buys elegance, not output. The Olight i3T 2 EOS gives you more lumens for less than a third of the price, and the ArkPro (AED 500) gives you a far brighter EDC light that also has a green laser and UV.

The light, honestly

Olight’s own numbers, which we respect them for publishing, tell the real story:

Treat 60 lm as the working level and 120 lm as a burst, exactly as we advise with every torch we review — the pattern is the same from the O’Pen Glow to 80,000-lumen monsters, just scaled down. Sixty lumens is plenty for a fuse box, an engine bay label, a hotel keyhole or a menu in a dim restaurant. The 14 m beam reaches across a room, not across a car park. Why so short on runtime? The laser: the reason this pen exists

The two-level Class 3R green laser is bright enough to be obvious on a projector screen or a sunlit wall diagram — green is far more visible to the eye than the red dots of older pointers. One click switches between laser, clip light and tip light, so you can move from pointing at a slide to writing a note without looking at the pen. Two things to respect: Class 3R is a regulated class, so treat it like a presentation tool — never point it at people, vehicles or aircraft — and laser runtime is about 3 hours total, so top up before a conference day.

Writing with it

This is where Olight surprised us. The 33.5 g weight and tapered grip feel like a proper executive pen, not a torch cosplaying as one. The 0.4-lumen tip light rings the ballpoint so you can write legibly in a dark bedroom, cockpit-dark site office or power cut without waking anyone or blinding yourself — and it runs 26 hours. A spare refill comes in the box, and the refill is replaceable, so the pen half will not be disposable.

The UAE reality check

Two honest limits worth knowing before you buy. First, the specified working temperature tops out at 40°C — fine for pockets, bags and air-conditioned everywhere, but do not leave it baking in a parked car in July, where cabins run far hotter (our summer heat guide explains what UAE car interiors do to lithium cells). Second, the listing publishes no IP water-resistance rating. Rain and hand-wash splashes are one thing; do not drop it in the pool. If waterproofing matters, that is a point for the torch-shaped alternatives.

What we’d change

A slightly bigger cell — even 200 mAh — would stretch the runtimes meaningfully. A published IP rating would remove the guesswork. And a neutral-white clip light (the current one is cool 6500K) would flatter paper and skin tones more. None of these are deal-breakers for what is fundamentally a boardroom tool; all three are things Olight could fix in an O’Pen 4.

How it compares

vs Olight O’Pen Glow (AED 378): same price, same 120 lm pen-light concept, different party trick — the Glow trades the green laser for its own signature look and charging arrangement. vs Olight i3T 2 EOS (AED 109): if you only want light, the i3T gives you 200 lm from an AAA, weighs 41.8 g and costs 71% less. It just cannot write, point or look at home next to a Montblanc.
